What's more tacky than a toilet seat

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

So, it's Tuesday and thus time to get a bit tacky!

What's more tacky than a decoupage toilet seat? Really, anyone?

"Organizing tip of the day" my *&!

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Ok, Martha, I normally enjoy my little organizing tip of the day, but really! This is how she recommends we store fabric scraps. Sheesh!

First, has she SEEN the amount of scraps I have? Really, it would take about 500 of these hangers to store my fabric scraps. Second...this totally looks tacky. Where would you hang this that it wouldn't look like a bunch of ratty pieces of fabric you should throw out?

So, I missed tacky Tuesday, but honestly I think this works....now I'm off to have my nails done!

Martha....I'm disappointed!

Tacky glue and tacky tape - I digress for a week on Tacky Tuesday

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

When I do my searches for Tacky Craft Tuesday, the most popular result is this little "number"....tacky glue. I have also run across tacky tape (which I have NO idea what is...enlighten me readers). I have to say. ICK!
Ok, I'm biased. I have no idea why you need glue - except to fix broken pottery or a broken chair (note the word "broken") can't you sew or find some other way to attach things?
In crazy quilting, there are no rules...ok, one. One that I know of. And the only rule is NO GLUE! Ever! This isn't to say that rule isn't broken, but there is a snobbery against gluing anything when you could sew it or attach it otherwise. It just looks and feels icky.
Now, I work with fabric, so for the most part, glue feels nasty on fabric and I avoid it. I can see if you worked with paper that might be different (although I have gotten out the needle and thread with paper as well).
I admit, I'm being a snob here (but isn't "Tacky Craft Tuesday" kind of snobby by nature?), but is there a connection between tacky crafts and tacky glue?

Tacky Craft Tuesday - Weddings can be Tacky Too!

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

In order to save money, people often make their own wedding headpieces, bouquets and other wedding chachke, but this wonderful picture shows that some people should STOP and go buy their items! (what IS that headpiece - eeek!)

Thanks to swelldesigner in the Tacky Craft Tuesday Flickr group! It's a beauty! (or well, not really!)

More 70's tacky goodness!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Beautifully placed under last week's classic poodle outfit, we find this lovely number:
I'm not even quite sure what to say about this. The outfit looks tasteful enough underneath, it was necessary to put flower petals all over your arms? In what world would this be stylish? Not to mention they went to the trouble to cut the petals out of "three subtle shades of organza". I can think of much better ways to use organza.

Tacky Craft Tuesday Returns!

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

You have all heard my whining (scroll to previous posts) so I won't explain whey "Tacky Craft" took a break, but hopefully I'm returning with a bang! This Lovely coat would appall even the biggest pet lover! Eeek! The only thing that would make it worse is doing it in the classic 70's orange and brown combo.

This item is from a 1970's Woman's Day magazine....and next week will be the lovely ladies outfit who is gazing up at the dog! Stay Tuned!

Tacky Craft Tuesday

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

I actually missed last week! Gasp! But I am back and better this week! (hee hee). I'm also working on my new project, but I'll post that seperately.

So, today's tacky craft is compliments of Craftzine.com where I quite often find lots of useful and interesting suggestions. However, for this Tuesday I put in a search for "recycled" which seems to be hit or miss in the quality area. So, here's my suggestion for this week:

From Laughing Purple goldfish it's a tiara out of phone wire. Now, I will give you that it's creative and even maybe pretty, but where in life is this necessary? Really?

Now this idea for recycling I thought had style and was very creative (and thus is "anti-tacky"?):

Making jewelry from Starbucks cards. Be sure to go over to Confessions of an OCD Knitter for more pictures and frankly really pretty jewelry.

So, that's my take on the "good and the bad" of recycling....maybe everyone has other suggestions? Oh, and be sure to leave me a comment if you've posted your own Tacky Craft! :)

Tacky Tuesday and other things that occupy my time right now

Wednesday, June 04, 2008

I've been a slack poster, but I've been trying to get myself organized for the summer. I have a ton of teacher friends who are SO relieved at the beginning of the summer, but when you work at home, the summer looms ahead with trying to balance work, kids and some fun! :) Luckily the kids are in a really nifty art camp for the next 3 weeks (just a few hours a day) so that's fun and makes me seem like a great Mom! :)

So, as a result, I kind of missed Tacky Tuesday, so with the Wed post of it, here is my newest selection:
Posted by Spurmarks on flickr, this little gem was added to my Flickr group on my request. I think the dawn of cel phones and Ipods have brought in a whole other venue for tacky crafts, but you have to admit this is particularly tasteless (ha, ha, pun intended)!

In other news, I'm DONE with the all white pillow and it goes in the mail today. I'm really happy with the way the edges turned out, but not sorry to see it whisked off in the mail and done!

as for my slack blogging excuse, we moved our garden in our backyard this past weekend (no easy task) and I have a big new web design contract I'm signing this week.

Tacky Craft Tuesday - the Loo Roll Lady

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

This first photo was titled "nana's Loo Roll Lady" and I love the term. They are kind of the ultimate tacky craft. However, some are done lovingly and with some charm.

Both photos are off of flickr - one was in a shop window and one really was "nana's loo roll lady". Gotta love them! So, do you have a tacky craft? If you post one, feel free to use our handy dandy button and then link back here:

Just post in the comments so I know you're participating!

Join me in "Tacky Craft Tuesday"

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

I'm not sure if you have read my post on "tacky or craft" or the follow up here but I thought it was about time to get some feedback on what people thought was tacky. I think the important thing with this is that it's your opinion...there is no wrong or right!

However, you have to admit that when flipping through the magazines of yesteryear, there were some crafts that were downright tacky! Like huge! So, I'm curious to see what everyone can dig up.

Here's my first find out of the November 1971 "Woman's Day" Magazine:

Now, that doesn't LOOK that bad, until you read the description:

24. Lint brushes are handy items to keep in entryway bedroom or car glove compartment. These are nylon net, plastic crochet rings, ribbon and plastic flowers. And you can turn them out by the dozen.
Well, let me tell you there are a bunch of things wrong with that. First, how do they work? I can't even picture it working (is my lint just smaller?). Yikes, they look like something that you would not have any idea what is and thus put in a garage sale. Which leads me to "turn them out by the dozen". So, did anyone get any of these as a gift?

I'm really looking forward to your submissions, so much so that I have created a flickr group and a badge!

Just put it on your blog and link back here. I'll highlight the best ones I see on the flickr group each week!

If you don't agree with someone's "tacky" then post your own! :) After all, someone's trash has always been another one's treasure!
